I too have an 80 year old surface grinder. The downfeed doesn t creep and normally it doesn t have any sort of lock for the shaft. Having the downfeed creep sure sounds like a scary proposition My grinder is a 1935 Gallmeyer and Livingston. When I got it 8 or 10 years ago I ordered a complete manual from them. It was 75.00 but well worth it.
